Summer Palace and Princely Greiz Park
The jewel of the Vogtland
The Summer Palace stands on the southern edge of the Fürstlich Greizer Park, in the floodplain of the White Elster. The Summer Palace was built in 1769 under the then Count – and later Prince – Heinrich XI Reuss of the Elder Line as a ‘Maison de belle retraite’, a beautiful retreat. The park, covering an area of around 43 hectares, has its origins in a Baroque pleasure garden designed according to architectural principles. Following a devastating flood, work began in 1800 to transform it into a landscape park, which was gradually expanded during the 19th century. From 1873 onwards, the park took on the layout that characterises it to this day.
In 1922, the Greiz State Collection of Books and Engravings was opened in the Summer Palace. The collection comprises prints and books dating from the 16th to the 19th century. In 1975, the Satiricum was founded, a collection of historical and contemporary caricatures.
