Exhibition: ‘Learning to See – Between Monastery and Preserved Food’
This multimedia exhibition takes visitors on a journey through the approximately 1,000-year history of St Wigbert’s Monastery in Göllingen. The evolution of the monastery complex plays a central role in the exhibition. A key focus is on the founding of the monastery and the monastic culture that flourished there for over 500 years. Other highlights include its conversion into a manor and, finally, its use as a tinned food factory.

Discover 1,000 years of monastic history
The indoor and outdoor exhibition explores the history of the monastery in all its facets, from its founding as a Benedictine monastery in the Middle Ages, through its subsequent dissolution and conversion, right up to the recent past. The exhibition begins by examining the architecture, culture and economic foundations of the monastery. It also showcases the transformation of the complex and, ultimately, its preservation through civic engagement during the GDR era.
Permanent exhibition with an outdoor tour
The space where fine tinned goods were once stored now houses the new permanent exhibition. From the interactive timeline to the ‘Storehouse of Legends’, visitors are guided through the monastery’s history across the ages. Time and again, attention is drawn to the traces of the various eras and periods of use that are still visible on the buildings. Outside, the tour continues with information boards and signposts. A multimedia guide also offers interactive elements and further layers of insight through videos and interviews. Children’s stations keep the little ones engaged and guide them playfully through the site.
Multimedia guide
To complement the exhibition, a multimedia guide takes visitors around the outdoor area and, in an entertaining way, offers further opportunities to explore the monastery’s history through pictures, films and games. In-depth sections within the exhibition provide further information.
The Multimedia Guide app is available at guide.thueringerschloesser.de; it works like a website and does not need to be downloaded. The free app, which includes useful visitor information, is available in German and English.
