Kirms-Krackow House
Flower Power in the Biedermeier period. The Green Revolution around 1820
Indoor garden – garden room: the Biedermeier period (1815–1848) marked the beginnings of green living. With the much-cited return to domestic life, plants captured the hearts and rooms of the middle classes. In Weimar, Franz Kirms and his wife Caroline Krackow were among the most dedicated ‘Blumisten’ ( plant lovers).
This special exhibition shows how plants became status symbols, educational objects and silent companions. Historical exhibits, illustrations and original planters tell the story of this new domestic culture and botanical curiosity. Discover which plants were particularly popular and how they were cared for, displayed and interpreted. A glimpse into the culture of green living and gardening, which continues to influence and inspire us to this day.
